→ Character Information ←
→ Character Name:
→ Canon: Ouran High School Host Club
→ Canon Point: Right before the final episodes
→ Personality:
Haruhi is a very independent girl, especially at the beginning of the series. She doesn’t rely on anyone but herself for anything, extending from applying for schools and scholarship programs to trying to take on three guys who are at least a foot taller than her to hiding by herself whenever she hears thunder. Partly she does this because she doesn’t like being seen as incapable of taking care of herself, and partly to not burden others with her own needs. However, until the Host Club points it out to her, she doesn’t understand that what she does by herself sometimes DOES burden people by making them worry.
She’s a very hard worker because of this, and doesn’t really try to have fun by herself and usually has to be dragged along to do anything- though, for the most part, she ends up enjoying it. She certainly doesn’t take it well when people are having too much fun at the cost of actually doing something productive. This is the main issue she has with the Host Club, especially in the beginning- she later realizes that they actually do try to help girls. (Her other main issue with them is that they’re ‘rich bastards’ and have no real concept of how normal people live.)
Though she has a strong personality in a lot of ways, and is usually pretty observant, Haruhi is also very, very clueless when it comes to certain things. She usually can’t tell when a boy likes her (which is often, she got confessions quite a bit in middle school) and can’t even figure out that most of the girls who ‘designate’ her as a host have a crush on her. One of the reasons so many of the girls like her is that she tends to be pretty sensitive to how people really feel (though often she’s less sensitive about what comes out of her mouth- she says some pretty malicious things sometimes, usually without meaning to be) and she’s pretty straightforward and honest about the things she feels matter.
The straightforwardness can, obviously, also be a bit of a drawback, and goes back to the part about her sometimes saying things that come out sounding rather malicious. She often says things that she believes to be true, and doesn’t consider how cruel the words might sound. This is made a little more difficult to interpret thanks to the fact that her form of humor is very deadpan, and it’s sometimes hard to tell if she’s poking fun or is speaking her mind.
Haruhi can be remarkably stubborn, and sometimes refuses to dress up like the rest of the host club or just doesn’t want to go along with whatever plan they (or other people) cook up. There are only a few ways to get around this, as she’s not likely to change her mind. One is to appeal to her more sensitive side- the Lobelia girls get her to be in their performance by talking about how Benio is trying to live up to her mother’s reputation. The other is to bribe her with food. Haruhi loves good food, and it’s a running joke in the first part of the series that she’s never had ootoro (a form of tuna) and she’s willing to put up with some of the Host Club’s antics because of a chance to have some.
Something that is not touched on a lot in the series except in passing is that Haruhi is very intelligent. She was such a good student that she got into Ouran purely on scholarship, and her dream is to become a lawyer like her mother. Because of this dream (and her background), she’s a lot more grounded in reality than some of the other host club members, and has a clear path planned out ahead of her that she wants to pursue.
→ History:
Haruhi was born to a lawyer (her mother) and an ‘okama’ (her father- basically, it means ‘crossdresser’). Her mother passed away when she was about five, and from that moment on Haruhi accepted all of the house chores, including cooking and shopping, upon herself. Because she admired her mother so much, she made it her goal to become a lawyer as well. She was a very independent child (somewhat to the chagrin of her father), and went so far as to apply to Ouran High School as a scholarship student by herself.
She was accepted into the school, and for a little while spent all her time studying. One day, while looking for a place to study, she wound up in the Third Music Room, the designated room for the Host Club. The Host Club is run by a bunch of attractive guys from high ranking families in order to please women, each with a different ‘type’. Tamaki (the ‘prince’ type and the president of the club) is the heir to the Suou family, and his father is the head of the school. Kyouya (the ‘cool’ type and vice-president) is from the Ootori family, which specializes in hospital management and for some reason also has a private police force. The Hitachiin brothers, Hikaru and Kaoru (the ‘little devil’ types) are twins, whose mother is a famous fashion designer. Finally, Honey (the “cute” type) and Mori (the “wild” type) are cousins, Honey coming from the main branch of the family who were skilled martial artists.
Because she had a flat chest, had cut her hair short because gum had gotten in it, and wasn’t wearing an assigned uniform, most of the club members assumed she was male. She didn’t bother to correct them, and would have had nothing else to do with them, if she hadn’t accidentally broken a 8,000,000 yen vase trying to get away. Because of that debt, she was forced into working for the Host Club, first for trivial chores, and later as a host when they realize she’s actually pretty attractive. (During this process, most of them figure out she’s a girl- it takes Tamaki the longest, though.)
She ended up learning pretty quickly that the Host Club’s heart was at least in the right place- one of their costumers was having trouble with her fiance, so they (in a rather roundabout way) found a way for them to make up. During this rather short period of time, the Host Club has already ‘adopted’ Haruhi, so when the physical exams come around, they make a plan to keep her gender secret (Hikaru and Kaoru even say, ‘We’d find it annoying if other guys started talking to her’). Though, in some ways the keeping other guys away from her kind of backfires, as girls’ll just do it instead- take Renge, for example, a French girl obsessed with anime who heads to Japan because Kyouya looks like a character from a visual novel. By the end of the episode? She has a crush on Haruhi instead. (Tamaki does not approve.)
They also wind up helping out an elementary schooler who had a crush on a girl in his class who was moving away. Then the host club drags Haruhi to a an artificial tropical water park, which she doesn’t like so they wind up going to the beach later. (However, this time they bring all their customers with them.) Hikaru and Kaoru come up with a ‘game’- whoever can find out what Haruhi is afraid of wins. They don’t come up with much- she even puts herself in danger to try and protect some of the girls, and doesn’t realize why Tamaki is so angry with her afterwards. Eventually, the rest of the club manages to get across to her that he was angry because she’d worried them, and she tries to find him to apologize. When he eventually finds her, he discovers that she’s deathly afraid of thunder, to the point where she can’t move. Even though he technically ‘won,’ he doesn’t tell anyone this.
When they return to the school, there is a multi-school arts thing going on, and the girls from a prestigious school called the Lobelia Girls’ Academy instantly recognize Haruhi as female, and try to convince her to join their school. In order to try and convince her not to go, the Host Club dresses up as women, which Haruhi thinks is about the funniest thing ever. She explains to the girls that she never had any desire to leave Ouran, because she has a goal to fulfill. The Lobelia girls leave, but promise to come back for her in the future.
Over the summer, Haruhi gets a part-time job at a pension. Because they have nothing better to do, the Host Club arrives and holds a competition to figure out who gets to stay there. The twins end up winning, but once one of Haruhi’s friends from middle school shows up things get... bad. Namely, Hikaru gets kind of bitchy and jealous. To try and get him to focus more on other people, Kaoru promises to take Haruhi on a date to make up for his brother, and then gets ‘sick.’ He tells Hikaru to be really nice to Haruhi and try to think about her first, which works for a while, under they run into Haruhi’s friend right before a thunderstorm. Hikaru runs off, and Haruhi goes after him, but then the thunder starts and she winds up hiding in a church until Hikaru (who got yelled at by Tamaki) finds her and apologizes.
Later in the summer, she runs into Kyouya in a department store (where he’d been literally dropped by Tamaki), and she discovers a few more things about him, and points out that he’s more like Tamaki than he’d admit. Then, Lobelia returns! With the intent to steal Haruhi’s first kiss. Which... sort of happened by accident already, haha.
When Ritsu Kasanoda shows up asking for Mori’s help in changing his image so he could ACTUALLY MAKE FRIENDS, Haruhi hangs out with him and considers him her friend. However, Kasanoda’s kind of busy noticing how attractive she is (while thinking she’s a guy), and is beginning to seriously question his sexuality until he accidentally walks in on her changing. He ends up joining the host club as a customer, designating Haruhi as his host. [I’ll be taking her after this episode.]
→ Abilities:
Haruhi is very intelligent and very independent- as such, she knows how to do a lot of things well.
→ Strengths:
Haruhi is very strong-willed, very determined, and very set in her own ideas of how the world works. She doesn’t believe in frivolity or excess, and doesn’t see why people make a big fuss over things like gender roles, making her a very accepting person. She’s a hard worker and is very goal driven.
→ Weaknesses:
Much of this is to the flip side of the above- she’s stubborn, hard to change, and doesn’t really know how to have fun unless someone shows her or drags her along for the ride. She also can be too blunt and say things that come off a lot worse than she means. She’s also really dense when it comes to romance.
